Water and Gas Worx covers the whole North Shore — from the 1920s villas in Devonport, across the apartments and townhouses of Takapuna and Milford, through the leafy streets of Forrest Hill, Sunnynook and Mairangi Bay, up to the newer builds in Albany and Long Bay, and down the western side through Birkenhead, Northcote and Glenfield. The Shore is hugely mixed, and the plumbing work reflects that. One call-out might be replacing a galvanised main in a 100-year-old Devonport villa, the next might be a leaking tempering valve in a Takapuna apartment, and after lunch it might be a brand new continuous flow install in a Long Bay build.
Peter is a qualified plumber and certified gasfitter with over 17 years on the tools across Auckland. Yes — we cross the Harbour Bridge every week and the travel time is built into normal scheduling. If you are on the North Shore and something is leaking, blocked, or refusing to give you hot water, we can usually be out the same day. Call 0800 322 322 any time.
The Shore has its own character, and the plumbing work out here is a proper mix. A few things make it different from the rest of Auckland.
Huge range of housing stock. Devonport, Bayswater and parts of Takapuna are full of 1920s villas and pre-war bungalows with original galvanised supply pipes and earthenware drainage. Milford, Forrest Hill and Glenfield are mostly 1960s and 70s brick-and-tiles. Albany, Long Bay and Oteha are brand new. Every suburb is a different era, and the plumbing problems are different with it.
Coastal salt corrosion. Takapuna, Milford, Browns Bay, Mairangi Bay, Torbay and Long Bay all cop salt spray off the water. External brass fittings, cylinder bands, califont cabinets and mixer chrome corrode much faster out here than inland. A cylinder mounted in an external cupboard near the sea will not last as long as one in a dry internal space.
Apartments and body corporates. Takapuna and Milford have a huge number of apartment blocks and townhouse complexes. Body corporate plumbing work — shared risers, common hot water systems, leak tracing between units — is a regular part of what we do out here. It needs a plumber who can work with building managers and keep neighbours informed.
Cliffs, hills and elevation. Devonport, Bayswater, Torbay and parts of Birkenhead sit on steep hills. Elevation drops water pressure, and old galvanised pipework in these suburbs often cannot deliver the flow rate a modern family needs. Upgrading the main to 25mm PE from the boundary is usually the first step.
The jobs we see most often on the Shore:
Most of the North Shore is on the Vector natural gas network, so hot water choices out here look similar to East Auckland. The three options we install most often:
Natural gas continuous flow (Rinnai Infinity or Rheem). The go-to across most Shore suburbs. A Rinnai Infinity A26 on natural gas runs endless hot water for a family of four or five, takes up no cylinder space, and running costs are lower than electric. Any continuous flow install needs a certified gasfitter and a gas compliance certificate.
Mains-pressure electric cylinders. Still the simplest swap for a failed low-pressure cylinder. A Rheem Stellar 180L mains-pressure cylinder covers a typical family comfortably. In coastal suburbs we spec stainless bands and mounting hardware to fight the salt air.
Hot water heat pumps. The efficiency option. A heat pump cylinder uses roughly a third of the electricity of a standard resistance cylinder. They need clearance for airflow and a bit more upfront cost, but the running savings stack up. Brands we trust: Reclaim, Shinhoo, and the Rheem Ambiheat range. Read our heat pump hot water guide before you decide.
Here is a real one from earlier this year. A homeowner in Devonport called us because the shower pressure had dropped to a trickle and the kitchen tap was running brown. The house was a 1920s villa on a sloping section — classic Devonport. We tested the pressure at the boundary, which was fine, and then at the internal manifold, which had dropped hard. Pulled up the old toby cover and found the galvanised main had rusted through after 100 years in the ground.
We ran a new 25mm PE pipe from the boundary toby up through the garden to the internal manifold, pressure-tested the lot, and had them back on full pressure by mid-afternoon. Total time on site was about six hours. That job is pretty much every second call we get in the older Devonport, Bayswater and Belmont villas — and catching it before a burst saves a lot of money and ceiling damage.
"Very personable, down to earth and easy to deal with, great communication."
"Reliable, personable, efficient and knows his stuff! Always helpful and charges reasonable."
Our rate is $155 plus GST for the first hour, then $100 plus GST per hour after that. After-hours is $295 plus GST for the first hour, then $100 plus GST per hour after that. Public holiday rates are $395 plus GST for the first hour. We quote before starting so you know the cost upfront — same rates across every North Shore suburb, no extra charge for crossing the bridge.
Yes. For emergencies like burst pipes, gas leaks, or no hot water we aim for same-day — often within a few hours during business hours. After-hours emergency service is available across Takapuna, Milford, Devonport, Albany, Glenfield and every other North Shore suburb.
For scheduled work we usually book within a few days. For emergencies during business hours we aim to be on site within 60 to 90 minutes depending on where you are, current workload, and Harbour Bridge traffic. Takapuna, Milford and Northcote are the quickest to reach; Long Bay, Albany and Torbay take a little longer.
Yes. We install hot water heat pump cylinders from Reclaim, Shinhoo and Rheem Ambiheat across all North Shore suburbs. A heat pump cylinder runs on about a third of the electricity of a standard resistance cylinder. We will assess your install location first to make sure there is enough airflow and clearance.
Yes. Tree root intrusion into old earthenware drainage is common in the older Shore suburbs — Devonport, Bayswater, Takapuna and Milford. We use a CCTV drain camera to find the break, then clear the roots with a high-pressure water jetter or mechanical cutter. If the pipe itself is badly cracked we can quote repair or relining options.
Yes. Peter is a certified gasfitter and issues Gas Safety Certificates and Certificates of Compliance for all natural gas and LPG work on the North Shore — including califont installs, bayonet points, hobs and full system upgrades. Certificates are lodged electronically and emailed to you.
Yes. We work with body corporates and building managers across Takapuna, Milford, Browns Bay and the rest of the Shore. Shared risers, leak tracing between units, common hot water systems and compliance work are all part of what we do. We keep building managers and tenants informed at every step.
Yes. Older villas and bungalows in Devonport, Bayswater, Belmont and older Takapuna often have original galvanised supply pipes and aging earthenware drainage. A plumbing assessment can identify failing supply pipes, cracked drains, or tired hot water systems before they become an emergency — and usually saves a lot of money compared to reactive repairs.
