About the Rheem Low Pressure 135L

The Rheem Low Pressure 135L is the standard replacement cylinder for older Auckland homes that were built with low pressure hot water plumbing. At just 25 kg empty, it is light enough for a single installer to manoeuvre into a hot water cupboard — a practical advantage in the tight spaces typical of villas, bungalows, and 1960s-80s builds where these cylinders sit. It operates at a maximum of 76 kPa, fed by a header tank in the roof space or a pressure-limiting valve on the mains supply.

Built from copper and manufactured in New Zealand, the Rheem low pressure cylinder suits Auckland's water conditions well. The triple inlet configuration — bottom, left, and right-hand sides — gives installation flexibility regardless of where existing pipework enters the cupboard. At 2.0 kW, the element delivers a recovery rate of 34 litres per hour at a 50°C temperature rise, which serves one to two people in Auckland's moderate climate comfortably.

We install Rheem low pressure cylinders across Auckland — North Shore, West Auckland, South Auckland, and the eastern suburbs. A like-for-like replacement takes three to four hours. We disconnect and remove the old unit, fit the new cylinder with a fresh valve pack and switch kit, connect to your existing plumbing, and test everything before we leave. If your home would benefit from upgrading to mains pressure instead, we can advise on what's involved and quote accordingly.

What was a very stressful time for me when my under the bench hot water cylinder leaked at the beginning of the Easter weekend was made so much easier when I contacted Water and Gas Worx. They replaced the cylinder when they said they would and arrived on time. The plumber was very courteous, worked hard and efficiently, tidied up the mess and took away the rubbish.

Frequently Asked Questions — Rheem Low Pressure 135L

What is the Rheem Low Pressure 135L installed price in Auckland?
The Rheem Low Pressure 135L is $2,499 incl GST fully installed. This includes the unit, removal and disposal of the old cylinder, low pressure valve pack, electrical switch kit, safe tray, and connection to existing plumbing.
Why are low pressure cylinders still common in Auckland?
Many Auckland homes built before the 1990s were plumbed for low pressure hot water. The plumbing, taps, and mixers are designed for low pressure operation. A like-for-like low pressure replacement is often the most practical and cost-effective option, avoiding the expense of replumbing the entire house for mains pressure.
What is the difference between a low pressure and mains pressure cylinder?
A low pressure cylinder operates at a maximum of 76 kPa, fed by a header tank in the roof space or a pressure-limiting valve. A mains pressure cylinder operates at full street pressure (up to 1,000 kPa). Low pressure systems deliver lower flow at taps but are simpler, lighter, and suit older homes that were plumbed for them.
How long does a low pressure cylinder replacement take?
Most like-for-like replacements are done in 3-4 hours. We disconnect the old cylinder, install the new one in the same position, fit the valve pack and switch kit, connect plumbing and electrical, and test everything before we leave.
Should I upgrade from low pressure to mains pressure?
If your home's plumbing can handle it, upgrading to mains pressure gives you better water pressure at all taps. It costs more because additional valves and pipework are needed, and your existing taps and mixers may need replacing. We can advise on what suits your home and budget.
What brand of low pressure cylinder do you install?
We install Rheem low pressure copper cylinders, manufactured in New Zealand. They are the most common low pressure cylinder in NZ with good warranty support and readily available parts. The 135-litre model suits 1-2 people in Auckland's moderate climate.
What warranty does the Rheem Low Pressure 135L have?
Rheem provides a 5-year cylinder replacement warranty and 1-year parts and labour warranty for domestic installations. We register the warranty with Rheem NZ on the day of installation.
