• Low-pressure hot water — Many homes still run the original low-pressure cylinder or an old replacement. They can't deliver decent shower pressure and run out fast. Mains pressure conversions make a massive difference.
• Dezincifying brass fittings — Original brass tap bodies and fittings from the 1960s-70s deteriorate over time. They become brittle and crumbly. If your taps are hard to turn or leaking at the body, it's probably dezincification.
• Polybutylene in 1980s renovations — Some homes renovated in the 1980s-90s had poly-B pipe installed. It's grey plastic that fails at the fittings without warning. If your place was done up in that era, worth checking.
