Fast diagnosis and repair of hot water cylinders, califonts, and continuous flow systems across Auckland.
Waking up to no hot water is one of the most frustrating problems a homeowner can face. Whether your morning shower runs cold or your kitchen tap refuses to heat up, the issue needs sorting quickly. At Water and Gas Worx, we diagnose and repair all types of hot water systems across Auckland, and we carry the most common parts on board so many jobs are completed in a single visit.
Before picking up the phone, there are a few things worth checking yourself. These simple steps can sometimes save you a callout fee.
After years of servicing Auckland homes, these are the faults we see most often:
Electric cylinders use one or two elements to heat the water. Elements corrode over time, especially in areas with hard water. A failed element means the cylinder cannot heat at all, or heats far too slowly. Replacement is straightforward and typically takes under an hour.
The thermostat controls when the element turns on and off. If it fails in the off position, the element never activates. If it fails in the on position, the cylinder overheats and the safety cut-out trips. Either way, you end up without usable hot water.
Modern continuous flow units use electronic ignition. If the gas valve, ignition module, or flame sensor develops a fault, the unit will not fire. These components are repairable, but diagnosis requires a certified gasfitter who understands the specific brand and model.
New Zealand building regulations require tempering valves on all hot water systems to prevent scalding. When a tempering valve seizes or fails, it can restrict hot water flow or deliver only cold water. This is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed issues we see.
Not every hot water problem requires a brand-new system. Here is a general guide to help you decide:
Many older Auckland homes, particularly in suburbs like Mt Eden, Grey Lynn, Ponsonby, and across the North Shore, still run low-pressure hot water systems. These systems operate at mains pressure on the cold side but rely on gravity feed from a header tank for hot water. Low-pressure systems have specific requirements for tapware, valves, and cylinder selection that differ from mains-pressure setups.
If you are upgrading from low-pressure to mains-pressure hot water, the entire plumbing system needs to be assessed. Older pipes and fittings may not be rated for mains pressure, and existing taps and mixers will likely need replacing. We handle the full conversion, including the cylinder, pipework, valves, and tapware, so everything works together safely.
Auckland also has areas served by natural gas (piped) and areas that rely on bottled LPG. The type of gas supply affects which hot water units are compatible and how they are installed. We work with both natural gas and LPG systems and can advise on the best option for your property.
