Smell Gas? Take These Steps Immediately

A gas leak is not something to ignore or put off until next week. Gas leaks pose a serious risk of explosion, fire, and carbon monoxide poisoning. At Water and Gas Worx, we respond to gas leak callouts across Auckland with the equipment and expertise to locate the leak, make it safe, and carry out a permanent repair.

Signs of a Gas Leak

Gas leaks are not always obvious. While a major leak will produce a strong smell, smaller leaks can go undetected for weeks or months. Here are the signs to watch for:

How We Detect and Repair Gas Leaks

Electronic Leak Detection

We use professional-grade electronic gas detectors that can sense gas concentrations far below what your nose can detect. These instruments pinpoint the exact location of a leak, even in concealed pipework behind walls or underground.

Pressure Testing

A pressure drop test (also called a tightness test) is the definitive method for confirming whether a gas system has a leak. We isolate the gas supply, pressurise the pipework, and monitor for any pressure loss over a set period. This test is required by New Zealand gas safety regulations whenever work is done on a gas system, and it is the standard we use to confirm that all repairs are leak-free.

Pipe Repair and Replacement

Once the leak is located, we carry out the repair. This may involve tightening a fitting, replacing a section of damaged pipe, or re-running a gas line if the existing pipework is corroded or substandard. All gas work is completed to NZS 5261 (the New Zealand standard for gas installations) and tested before being put back into service.

Natural Gas vs LPG

Auckland has both natural gas (reticulated piped gas supplied by Vector and other network operators) and LPG (bottled propane, commonly 45kg cylinders). The key differences when it comes to leak safety:

Both types of gas are explosive when mixed with air in the right proportions. Both require the same level of urgency when a leak is suspected.

Gas Safety Certificates

Under New Zealand law, a Gas Safety Certificate (GSC) must be issued for all gas installation and maintenance work. This certificate confirms that the work has been carried out by a certified gasfitter, the installation meets the relevant standards, and the system has passed a tightness test. At Water and Gas Worx, we issue a Gas Safety Certificate for every gas job we complete. If you have had gas work done by someone who did not provide a certificate, contact us for an inspection.

Why You Must Use a Certified Gasfitter

In New Zealand, it is illegal for anyone other than a certified gasfitter to carry out work on a gas installation. This is not a suggestion or a guideline. It is the law, enforced by the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Board. The reasons are straightforward: gas work done incorrectly can result in explosions, fires, carbon monoxide poisoning, and death.

Unqualified gas work also voids your insurance. If a fire or explosion occurs due to uncertified gas work, your insurer is within their rights to decline the claim entirely. Always ask to see a gasfitting practising licence before allowing anyone to work on your gas system.

The Auckland Gas Network

Auckland's natural gas network is extensive, covering most of the urban area from the North Shore through the central suburbs and out to East and South Auckland. The network is operated and maintained by Vector and Firstgas. If you suspect a leak on the street-side of your gas meter, contact the network operator directly as this is their responsibility. For leaks on the house-side of the meter, including all internal pipework, appliance connections, and gas fittings, that is where we come in.
