Gas compliance checklist with green ticks

If you have had any gas work done in your home — or you are buying or selling a property — you have probably heard of gas compliance certificates. Here is what they are, when you need one, and why they matter.

What Is a Gas Compliance Certificate?

A gas compliance certificate (also called a gas certificate of compliance or GCC) is a legal document that confirms gas work has been carried out safely and meets New Zealand regulations. It is issued by the gasfitter who completed the work.

Under NZ law, a gas compliance certificate must be issued for all gas work. This includes installing, altering, or servicing gas appliances, pipes, and fittings.

When Do You Need One?

A gas compliance certificate is required whenever:

Basically, if a gasfitter touches your gas system, there should be a certificate.

Why Does It Matter?

Safety

Gas leaks can cause explosions, fires, and carbon monoxide poisoning. A compliance certificate means a qualified professional has checked the work and confirmed it is safe. WorkSafe NZ oversees gas safety regulations in New Zealand.

Insurance

If you have a gas-related incident and there is no compliance certificate for the work, your insurance company may not cover the claim. This alone makes it worth having.

Selling Your Home

When selling a property, buyers (and their lawyers) often ask for gas compliance certificates. Missing certificates can delay or complicate a sale. If you have had gas work done, keep the certificates safe.

Legal Requirement

It is a legal requirement under the Gas Act and the Health and Safety at Work Act. Gasfitters who do not issue certificates are breaking the law. You can verify a gasfitter's licence on the Plumbers Gasfitters Drainlayers Board (PGDB) website.

What Does It Cost?

A gas compliance certificate is typically included in the cost of the gas work itself. If you need a standalone gas safety inspection and certificate (for example, when buying a home), expect to pay around $200 to $350 depending on the size of the property and number of gas appliances.

What Does the Inspection Involve?

A gas compliance inspection typically includes:

Do Not Use an Uncertified Gasfitter

Only a certified gasfitter can legally issue a gas compliance certificate. If someone offers to do gas work without providing a certificate, walk away. It is not worth the risk to your family or your insurance cover. We service all Auckland suburbs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a gas compliance certificate?

A gas compliance certificate (also called a gas cert or GCC) is a legal document that certifies gas work has been done safely and to the required standard. It is issued by a certified gas fitter after completing any gas installation, alteration, or repair work.

When do I need a gas compliance certificate?

You need one any time gas work is done on your property -- installing a new gas appliance, running new gas lines, replacing a gas hot water system, or repairing existing gas fittings. It is a legal requirement under New Zealand law.

How much does a gas compliance certificate cost?

The cost of the certificate itself is minimal, but the gas work it covers varies in price. A simple appliance connection might be a few hundred dollars including the cert, while a full gas installation could be several thousand. We include the certificate cost in our quotes.

Who can issue a gas compliance certificate in NZ?

Only a tradesperson with a current Certifying Gas Fitter or Crafts Gas Fitter practising licence issued by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board can issue a gas compliance certificate. Always check your gas fitter is licensed before any work starts.
