Water Pressure Issues in Auckland

Low pressure, high pressure, or inconsistent flow -- we diagnose and fix it properly.

← Back to Emergency Plumber

Water pressure problems are one of the most common plumbing complaints across Auckland. Whether your shower has turned into a trickle or your pipes are banging every time you turn off a tap, pressure issues affect your daily comfort and can cause real damage to your plumbing system if left unaddressed. At Water and Gas Worx, we diagnose the root cause and provide a lasting fix -- not a temporary workaround.

Low Water Pressure -- Causes and Fixes

Low pressure is frustrating. Showers take forever, dishwashers struggle to fill, and garden hoses barely reach the end of the lawn. Here are the most common causes we find in Auckland homes.

Partially Closed Toby or Isolation Valve

The toby (your water meter valve at the street boundary) or an internal isolation valve may not be fully open. This is the simplest cause and the first thing we check. It happens more often than you would expect, especially after maintenance work by Watercare.

Blocked Inline Filter or Strainer

Many homes have inline filters or strainers fitted at the mains connection or before the hot water cylinder. Sediment and debris from the water supply gradually block these filters, reducing flow throughout the house. A quick clean or replacement restores full pressure.

Corroded Galvanised Pipes

Homes built before the 1980s often have galvanised steel water pipes. Over decades, these pipes corrode internally, building up rust and scale that narrows the pipe bore. In severe cases, the pipe can be almost completely blocked. The only permanent fix is replacing the galvanised pipes with modern copper or PE pipe.

Watercare Supply Issues

Sometimes the problem is not your plumbing at all. Watercare maintains the public water mains, and supply pressure can vary by area. If your neighbours are experiencing the same issue, it may be a Watercare problem. We can measure your incoming pressure at the toby to confirm whether the supply is adequate.

Faulty Pressure Reducing Valve

A pressure reducing valve (PRV) controls the pressure entering your home from the mains. If the PRV fails or is set too low, it restricts flow to the entire house. We test, adjust, or replace PRVs as needed.

High Water Pressure -- Why It Is a Problem

While most people worry about low pressure, high pressure is equally damaging and often goes unnoticed until something breaks.

What Is Normal Water Pressure?

Watercare aims to provide a minimum pressure of 200 kPa (approximately 2 bar) at the point of supply. Most homes operate best between 350 and 500 kPa. Anything above 500 kPa should be reduced with a PRV to protect your plumbing and appliances.

Solutions We Provide

Auckland-Specific Pressure Challenges

Auckland's hilly terrain means water pressure varies significantly from one suburb to the next. Properties in elevated areas like Titirangi, Mt Eden, Three Kings, and parts of the North Shore often experience lower supply pressure simply because of their elevation relative to the nearest reservoir. Homes at the bottom of hills may have the opposite problem -- excessively high pressure that needs to be reduced.

We understand these local variations and tailor our solutions accordingly. A pump system that works perfectly in Titirangi is not the right answer for a home in Ponsonby with 800 kPa supply pressure.
