Common Toilet Problems

DIY vs Calling a Plumber

You Can Handle

Using a plunger for a minor blockage, adjusting the float level in the cistern, or replacing a flapper valve in a simple cistern are all reasonable DIY tasks if you are comfortable with basic tools.

Call a Plumber When

The toilet is leaking at the base, the blockage will not clear with a plunger, the cistern internals need replacing, or you are installing a new toilet. Toilet installations involve connecting to the waste pipe and water supply, which must comply with New Zealand plumbing regulations. Incorrect installation can cause leaks, sewer gas entry, or damage to your drainage system.

Toilet Replacement Options

If your toilet is beyond repair or you are renovating, there are several styles to consider:

Water Efficiency and WELS Ratings

All new toilets sold in New Zealand carry a WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) rating. A 4-star dual-flush toilet uses approximately 4.5 litres for a full flush and 3 litres for a half flush, compared to older single-flush models that use 11 litres or more per flush. Upgrading to a water-efficient toilet can significantly reduce your household water consumption.

Dual-flush systems are now standard across all major brands including Caroma, Kohler, Toto, and Villeroy and Boch. We can advise on the best option for your bathroom layout and budget.

Auckland Building Requirements

Toilet installations and replacements in Auckland must comply with the New Zealand Building Code and relevant plumbing standards. If you are adding a new toilet where there was not one before -- for example, converting a garage or adding an ensuite in Epsom, Onehunga, or the North Shore -- you may need a building consent from Auckland Council. We handle all the plumbing work to code and can advise on consent requirements for your project.

All toilet waste connections must meet NZS 4305 drainage standards, with correct fall, venting, and trap seal depth. We ensure every installation is done right so you do not end up with odour or drainage problems down the track.
