Signs You Have a Sewer Line Problem

Sewer issues rarely appear without warning. Knowing the early signs can save you from a full-blown sewage backup and expensive damage to your home.

• Bad smells -- A persistent sewage odour inside or outside your home is the most obvious sign. If you can smell it near drains, gully traps, or in your yard, the sewer line likely has a crack or blockage.
• Gurgling drains -- Air trapped in a damaged or blocked sewer line causes gurgling sounds when you flush the toilet or run water down a sink.
• Slow drains across multiple fixtures -- A single slow drain is usually a local blockage. When multiple fixtures drain slowly at the same time, the problem is further down the line in your main sewer connection.
• Soggy patches in the yard -- Unexplained wet areas or unusually green patches of grass can indicate a cracked sewer pipe leaking wastewater underground.
• Sewage backup -- The worst-case scenario. When wastewater comes back up through floor drains, toilets, or showers, you have a serious blockage or collapse in the sewer line that needs immediate attention.

Common Causes of Sewer Problems in Auckland

Auckland's housing stock spans more than a century, and many older suburbs still rely on original clay or earthenware sewer pipes. Here are the most common causes we encounter.

• Tree root intrusion -- Tree roots are drawn to the moisture in sewer pipes. They penetrate through joints and cracks in older clay pipes, eventually blocking the pipe entirely. This is extremely common in established Auckland suburbs with large trees.
• Ground movement -- Auckland's clay-heavy soils expand and contract with moisture changes. Over time, this ground movement causes pipe joints to separate or pipes to crack.
• Pipe collapse -- Old clay and earthenware pipes eventually deteriorate and collapse. This is particularly common in homes built before the 1970s where pipes have been in the ground for 50 years or more.
• Fat and grease buildup -- Cooking oils and fats poured down the kitchen sink solidify inside sewer pipes, gradually narrowing the pipe until it blocks completely.

How We Investigate Sewer Problems

CCTV Drain Inspection

We use a specialised CCTV camera to inspect the inside of your sewer line. The camera travels through the pipe, giving us a clear view of cracks, root intrusion, blockages, and collapsed sections. You get to see the footage and we provide a report on the condition of your pipes.

Dye Testing

When we need to trace where water is flowing, we use dye testing. A coloured dye is flushed through specific drains to confirm which pipes connect where, and to identify cross-connections or leaks that may not be visible on camera.

Sewer Repair Options

• Spot repair -- If the damage is localised to a small section, we excavate and replace just that part of the pipe. This is the most cost-effective option when the rest of the line is in good condition.
• Pipe relining -- A resin-coated liner is inserted into the existing pipe and cured in place, creating a new pipe inside the old one. This avoids excavation and is ideal for pipes under driveways, buildings, or landscaped areas.
• Full replacement -- When the pipe is too damaged for repair or relining, we replace the entire sewer line with modern PVC pipe. This is the most durable long-term solution.

Preventing Sewer Problems

• Never pour cooking oil, fat, or grease down the drain -- let it cool and dispose of it in the rubbish.
• Avoid flushing wet wipes, sanitary products, or anything other than toilet paper.
• If you have large trees near your sewer line, consider a preventative CCTV inspection every two to three years.
• Keep your gully traps clear of leaves and debris so they can function as overflow points if the sewer backs up.
• Address slow drains early before they turn into full blockages.
