About the Rinnai HydraHeat 275L

The Rinnai HydraHeat 275L is the top-of-range integrated heat pump from Rinnai — the unit we specify for larger Auckland households that want maximum efficiency and operational flexibility. With a COP of 4.0 and six operating modes (auto, eco, boost, night, vacation, and timer), the HydraHeat gives homeowners more control over when and how efficiently their hot water is heated. It is also one of the few heat pump cylinders in its class that operates down to minus 7 degrees Celsius.

The six operating modes make a meaningful difference in practice. Eco mode maximises heat pump efficiency and ignores the backup element entirely. Boost mode fires the electric element for faster recovery when demand is high. Vacation mode holds the tank at a low standby temperature to prevent legionella while you are away. Timer mode lets you schedule heat pump operation to off-peak electricity hours, typically overnight when electricity is cheapest if you are on a controlled or off-peak tariff.

At 43 dBa and 275 litres, the HydraHeat 275L is a serious long-term investment for a home of two to five people. Annual running costs in eco mode for a three to four person Auckland household are typically $200 to $300. Over a 15 to 20 year lifespan, the savings versus a standard electric cylinder can exceed $10,000. We install the HydraHeat Auckland wide — same week in most areas.

Peter installed our new infinity hot water system and gas line for our stove. He was very professional, thorough, turned up on time, cleaned up after himself and worked very hard, especially crawling under the house to get the plumbing done. Job well done, and also charges were reasonable, and as quoted. All work certified and legit.

What was a very stressful time for me when my under the bench hot water cylinder leaked at the beginning of the Easter weekend was made so much easier when I contacted Water and Gas Worx. They replaced the cylinder when they said they would and arrived on time. The plumber was very courteous, worked hard and efficiently, tidied up the mess and took away the rubbish.

Frequently Asked Questions — Rinnai HydraHeat 275L

What is the Rinnai HydraHeat 275L installed price in Auckland?
The Rinnai HydraHeat 275L is $8,299 incl GST fully installed. This includes the unit, old cylinder removal, plumbing connections, outdoor electrical circuit and switch, condensate drain, and warranty registration with Rinnai NZ.
What are the 6 operating modes on the Rinnai HydraHeat 275L?
Auto mode balances heat pump and electric element use automatically. Eco mode runs heat pump only for maximum efficiency. Boost mode uses the electric element for faster recovery. Night mode runs silently during sleep hours. Vacation mode maintains a low standby temperature. Timer mode schedules heating to specific times — useful for off-peak electricity rates.
What COP does the Rinnai HydraHeat achieve?
The HydraHeat 275L has a COP of 4.0 in standard conditions — it produces 4 units of heat per unit of electricity consumed. This is the highest COP among the integrated heat pump range we install, and translates to annual hot water running costs of roughly $200 to $300 for a three to four person household.
Is the Rinnai HydraHeat 275L noisy?
No. At 43 dBa it is one of the quietest heat pumps in its class. This is roughly equivalent to a quiet conversation or a library reading room. We still recommend positioning it away from bedroom windows, but most homeowners find it unobtrusive.
Does the HydraHeat 275L work in cold Auckland winters?
Yes. The HydraHeat operates down to minus 7 degrees Celsius — a lower threshold than most competing units. Auckland rarely drops below 5 degrees in winter, meaning the HydraHeat runs at full efficiency year-round. The 1.8 kW backup element activates automatically in extreme conditions.
What is the difference between the HydraHeat 275L and the Rheem AmbiHeat HDC270?
Both are the premium tier at $8,299 installed with similar capacity (275L vs 270L). The HydraHeat has six operating modes including timer and vacation. The AmbiHeat operates down to minus 10 degrees and has a slightly higher noise tolerance of 45 dBa. For most Auckland homes, either is an excellent choice — the HydraHeat's operating modes give more flexibility for households that want to optimise around electricity pricing.
Is a 275L heat pump sufficient for five people?
For five people with average usage, the 275L is on the borderline. In eco mode with normal usage patterns, 275 litres is typically sufficient. If your household has unusually high hot water demand — long showers, a soaker bath, etc — we would suggest assessing usage and considering the boost mode to supplement during peak periods.
