Hot water technology has come a long way, and the system that was installed when your house was built 20 or 30 years ago is almost certainly not the best option for you today.
At Water and Gas Worx, we help Auckland homeowners figure out the right hot water upgrade for their situation — and then we install it properly. No one-size-fits-all recommendations, just honest advice based on your household size, water usage, budget, and what is actually available at your property.
This is one of the most common upgrades we do in Auckland, especially in older homes. If your house was built before the mid-1990s, there is a good chance it has a low-pressure hot water system — typically a copper cylinder in the hot water cupboard fed by a header tank in the ceiling.
Low-pressure systems have a few well-known problems:
Upgrading to mains pressure means replacing the old low-pressure cylinder with a mains-pressure unit (or a continuous flow system) and removing the header tank. The difference is immediate — strong, consistent pressure at every tap and shower in the house. It is one of those upgrades where people say "why didn't we do this years ago."
One important note: when upgrading from low pressure to mains pressure, some of the existing pipework and fittings may need to be upgraded too. Low-pressure pipe connections and valves are not always rated for mains pressure. We check the whole system and replace anything that needs it.
Storage cylinders — whether electric or gas — heat and store a fixed amount of water. When that runs out, you wait for it to reheat. A continuous flow (also called instantaneous or tankless) system heats water on demand as it flows through the unit. You never run out.
The advantages of continuous flow:
Gas continuous flow units are the most popular choice in Auckland because they deliver high flow rates and fast recovery. Electric continuous flow units exist but are generally only suitable for single-point use (one tap or one shower) due to the electrical load required.
Electric hot water cylinders are the most common type in Auckland homes, but they are also the most expensive to run. Switching from electric to gas — either a gas cylinder or a gas continuous flow unit — can reduce your hot water running costs significantly.
The conversion involves:
One of the most common mistakes we see is hot water systems that are the wrong size for the household. An oversized system wastes energy heating water you never use. An undersized system runs out when you need it most.
As a rough guide for Auckland homes:
These are starting points — the actual recommendation depends on your specific situation. How many bathrooms do you have? Do you run multiple showers at once? Do you have a spa pool or hydronic heating? We look at the whole picture before recommending a system.
Hot water heat pumps are becoming increasingly popular in Auckland. They work like a reverse-cycle air conditioner — extracting heat from the surrounding air and using it to heat water. They use around a third of the electricity of a conventional electric cylinder, making them one of the most energy-efficient options available.
Heat pump hot water systems suit Auckland's climate well because they work most efficiently in mild temperatures — exactly what Auckland delivers for most of the year. They do need adequate ventilation around the unit (usually installed outdoors or in a well-ventilated garage), and they take longer to reheat than gas systems, so sizing is important.
